Telangana

A semi-arid state of central India with strong dependence on groundwater-fed agriculture, formed in 2014. Faces drought, heat extremes and water-table decline; Hyderabad has experienced repeated urban flooding while drought-affected mandals span multiple districts annually (1995-2012). The SAPCC covers 11 sectors including Mission Kakatiya tank-rejuvenation legacy, Hyderabad urban climate action, and renewable energy expansion.

About Telangana SAPCC

SAPCC Overview

Telangana's SAPCC v1.0 was prepared by the Environment Protection Training & Research Institute (EPTRI) under the Department of Environment, Forests, Science & Technology — formed in 2014 after the state's bifurcation from Andhra Pradesh. The plan covers 10 sectors per PDF p.22: Agriculture and allied; Forestry & Biodiversity; Energy; Industries (including mining); Transportation; Health; Urban Development; Tourism; Rural Development; and Research in Climate Change. A Climate Change Knowledge Centre is proposed at EPTRI.

Climate profile

  • Semi-arid central India climate; multiple agro-climatic zones; rainfall season-wise varies (2013-14 baseline).
  • Heat-wave events recorded with annual death cases tracked (2005–15); drought-affected mandals tracked district-wise (1995-2012).
  • PRECIS A1B regional climate model used for baseline plus 2020s, 2050s and 2080s projections (PDF p.84); rising temperature trends and shifting monsoon patterns documented.

Climate stress at a glance

  • Hyderabad has experienced repeated urban floods with documented property losses; drainage and storm-water infrastructure inadequate.
  • Drought-affected mandals declared multiple years; groundwater dependence makes agriculture acutely vulnerable to water-table decline.
  • Heat-wave deaths recorded annually 2005-15; rising vector- and water-borne disease burden in environmental-health context.
