About
Mission Overview
The National Water Mission (NWM) was conceived in 2008 as one of the eight core missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), and formally established on 6 April 2011 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. NWM is anchored by the Department of Water Resources, RD & GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and continued via Office Order dated 23 December 2021. The Mission aims at integrated water-resources management with focus on improving water-use efficiency by 20%, promoting sustainable conservation practices, ensuring equitable distribution, and enabling basin-level planning. Implementation runs through Line Ministries, State Governments, District Administrations, Urban and Rural Local Bodies, NGOs, CSOs and Water User Associations — with Jal Shakti Abhiyan and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari as the flagship campaigns. Reporting is quarterly per MoEF&CC format.
