National Mission for a Green India (NMGI)

Nodal:Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change

Contributing to India's NDCs through landscape-level ecological restoration, enhancement of forest and tree cover, restoration of degraded landscapes, livelihood diversification, and reduced dependence on conventional forest areas by promoting afforestation, agroforestry, and NTFP-based livelihoods, thereby creating an additional carbon sink.

About

Mission Overview

The National Mission for a Green India (GIM), one of the eight core missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), was officially launched in February 2014 and anchored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The Mission is implemented through the Directorate of Green India Mission in 17 States and 1 Union Territory, with State Forest Development Agencies (SFDAs) and Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs) serving as key implementing institutions at the field level. Technical and knowledge support is provided by institutions such as the Forest Survey of India (FSI), Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), and other partner organizations. The Mission adopts a holistic, landscape-based approach to address climate change adaptation and mitigation through enhancement of forest and tree cover, restoration of degraded landscapes, promotion of agroforestry and community forestry, and diversification of forest-based livelihoods through convergence, decentralized planning, community participation, ecosystem services enhancement, and promotion of climate-resilient livelihoods. GIM directly contributes to India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), particularly the target of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030, while also supporting India's Bonn Challenge commitment to restore 26 million hectares of degraded and deforested land. Mission progress is monitored through annual reporting and periodic reviews, with the next comprehensive revision tentatively envisaged around 2031.

  • Officially launched in February 2014; revised as Version 2 on 11 October 2020.
  • Anchored by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC); Directorate of Green India Mission as an implementing arm.
  • Operates across 17 States and 1 Union Territory (J&K) of India.
  • Implementation through State Forest Development Agencies and Joint Forest Management Committees; technical support from FSI, ICFRE, IIFM.
  • Aligned with the Paris Agreement (NDC), Bonn Challenge and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
  • Annual reporting; mission revision next tentatively planned in 2031.

Vision

Enhance India's forest and tree cover, restore degraded landscapes and create an additional carbon sink — supporting climate adaptation and mitigation through community-based forestry.
